frankie wasn’t born with his unicorn horn, but soon after it started to grow…
we’ll never forget the elation that we felt in our hospital room after frankie was born. he was our first child and although we knew we had a lot of work ahead of us, we had just brought this new human being into existence! after getting frankie home and trying to settle into our new routines, a curious little spot showed up on his forehead. this was about 2 weeks after he was born and we just thought he had infant acne or a bug bite. then the spot got bigger. and bigger. and bigger. by the time frankie was 3 months old this spot had become what we had dubbed his “unicorn horn”.

we knew absolutely nothing about hemangiomas. our family doctor gave us some literature about them and we made an appointment with a dermatologist to see what our options were. hemangiomas are harmless unless they are close to a child’s eyes, nose, or mouth. since frankie’s was right in the middle of his forehead we had nothing to really worry about, thankfully. he actually has two hemangiomas. the second is on his back and is very small. the biggest issue would be the stares and laughter from other people and children especially. of course, this was more of an issue for us parents as frankie was completely oblivious to any of that.
when we looked for a children’s book that dealt with hemangiomas we discovered that there aren’t very many at all. we felt that other parents might like to have something to read to their kids that would help them understand their birthmark(s), so we wrote frankie’s unicorn horn! the book is available now! head over to our “where to buy” page to get links to purchase it!
